Not all animals get the best lot in life. While some are treated nicely and humanely on farms and in homes, others are experimented on or mistreated in factory farms. And there are those that are treated well by their humans, but are a bit of an outcast to their fellow species, who long for chicks of their own but are sadly barren.
This is a story of the latter two animals: a duckling who escaped a duck production factory and a chicken who wanted a baby.
A woman in France needed a job to fund her trip to Asia, so she took a job at a duck production factory. Although her coworkers were desensitized to the treatment of the ducklings, this woman was not. When she found one of the ducklings in the parking lot of the factory, she couldn’t bring it back inside. Instead, she took it home, ensuring its safe escape. Described as “energetic and full of life” on the Imgur post, this duckling likely couldn’t have been happier to be out of the factory farm.
The woman’s home is in the French countryside, where she free-ranges seven chickens and a rooster. While most of the flock sleeps and eats together, one hen keeps to herself, desperately trying to have chicks. The Imgur post reveals that she nurtured rotten eggs and chestnuts, assuming they were her eggs.
The family decided to bond these two creatures by placing the duckling under the chicken. While it took a few tries, the chicken now recognizes the duckling as her baby and “the duckling follows her everywhere,” the post says.
